Adopt A Spot Scheme

Inspired by a community clean at Mid Coast surf break 3 Poles,

Mid Coast Surfing Reserve committee member & AASS founder Chris Lemar, saw the need for what he described as ‘A more practical, less symbolic’ solution to marine debris after failing to cover the nominated area for Clean Up Australia Day 2017.

Seeing the need for more regular cleans, Chris proposed the adoption of a surf break to remove waste from the carpark, beachfront and surrounding areas to minimise the amount of debris entering the ocean. This included the servicing of home-made butt bins (the No. 1 collected item) and reporting of findings to other adoptee members.

Volunteers from community surrounding the reserve immediately came forward to care for self nominated breaks.

The Onkaparinga Council, KESAB and MCSR joined to support the movement with insurance, and more recently, the State Labor Government awarded $16,200 funding toward stainless steel butt bins that will continue to be serviced by the spots adopter.

As community outside of the MCSR continue to express interest in adopting their own areas, Chris saw the need to expand the initiative to spots outside of surf breaks. And so Adopt A Spot Scheme was born.

As of Feb 2018 AASS has some 31 adopters, 46 bins and have collected an estimated 40,000 butts.

WHAT WE DO:

Weekly collection and sorting of debris from self designated area including the servicing of butt bins.

Reporting of debris collected, including photographs where possible, to identify common themes and forward data to KESAB. *Note this is how we received funding toward our bins

HAVE FUN! This is a chance to participate in environmental change and unite with all types of people sharing one dream.

Thank you to all of our dedicated volunteers.

If you are interested in adopting a spot please send us a direct message and we will endeavour to support you and your spot.
